Do it yourself fabric wallpaper, sounds difficult but is so simple and fun that even kids can do it! Of course this technique can also be used to decorate a myriad of things, such as, tables, boxes, doors, fridges etc
Personally, I have used it to decorate a once ugly door and several tables. As you can see in the picture above.
Here’s what you are going to need:
- Thick cotton fabric – this works best and is the easiest to use, although other fabrics will work. Ikea has a great selection.
- Painting brushes depending on the size of your project.
- A blade knife or scissors.
Now that you have everything you need here are the steps:
Step 1: Cut the fabric so that it is slightly bigger than the area and clean the area of any dust or dirt.
Step 2: Mix 1/2 cup cornstarch with 4 cups water and bring to a boil. Let cool. (It is ready to use when it turns goey)
Step 3: Tape your fabric to just above your area in my case the door. This helps keep things in place.
Step 4: Apply the mixture to the top part of your area, under the fabric (the thicker your fabric the more you need to apply) Use an old dvd cover to smooth the fabric out and align it. Kind of like when you apply contact paper to books 🙂
Step 5: Now that your fabric is stuck in place, take your time using the same technique to cover the rest of the area. Things can get a bit messy, but don’t worry the goey stuff will be completely clear when dry so have fun and don’t worry.
Step 6: When done, clean up a little bit. Make sure everything is in place and let dry. Once dry you can go back and cut off the excess fabric.
Step 7: Stand back and admire your work.
And here is the best part about this technique! It is completely 100% removable. Just pull the fabric off and wash the area with water. Even the fabric can be washed and reused. Perfect for when you are renting an apartment or just like change.
